SSE 2014 - The behind the scenes recap

And now a look into the behind the scenes for Stacie Shea Events the past year. Yesterday's post touched on all the beautiful weddings we had on the books for 2014. Today I am going to dive into the other fun stuff that makes my heart skip a beat and keeps me wanting more in this crazy industry. In January, Erica and I were lucky enough to get the chance to work with Justin and Mary Marantz on a HUGE project with Profoto USA. We had a steller team of vendors that helped us pull together this amazing event at the Wadsworth Mansion. If you look closely in the video series you might see little Ms. C making her film and photography debut!

February brought a crazy whirlwind of events. Erica headed up two editorial shoots in one day for our team while I was away at an industry conference. Erica was able to pull off a shoot with Kristen Waterbury  in the morning at The Carousel at Lighthouse Point Park. She immediately followed the morning shoot with a quick break down and set up for the Justin and Mary Walk Through A Wedding in the afternoon.

Justin and Mary Walk Through A Wedding at Carousel Park - Kate Spade inspired was one for the books later that afternoon. All while trying to stay warm in an unheated venue in February on the Eastcoast! Yikes...

As both the shoots were taking place at the Lighthouse Point Park I was at Bliss & Bespoke in Charleston, SC. WOW what an experience! I walked away from that  meeting some of the best of the best in the industry and finally getting to meet the amazing Jacin Fitzgerald from Lovely Little Details! I can hardly wait to see her again this upcoming spring..

Bliss and Bespoke

Bliss and Bespoke

After the east coast got pounded with a MASSIVE snowstorm and I had to leave Charleston early I was a little bummed I missed out on the final events for Bliss and Bespoke. Once I got home it was back to the grind with one of my FAVORITE shoots to date at my favorite wedding venue in all of Connecticut.. Winvian Luxury Resort and Spa in Litchfield, Connecticut. With this shoot brought an amazing team of vendors like Charlotte Jenks Lewis, Splendid Stems, and Beth Chapman from The White Dress by the Shore, plus many more. Vendor Credits here.

The month of March Erica and I teamed up with Jen Lynne Photography and the UBER talented Jeanette Kleitz of True Florette to pull together a little St. Patrick's day inspiration that we knew would have a home at our favorite wedding blog.. Style Me Pretty!

We ended the month with some planning and designing for a charity near and dear to our hearts..The Canary Kids + Epidemic Answers at the Loading Dock in Stamford.  It was an amazing night of dining with Abigail Kirsch and dancing till the wee hours of the night!

April was a month that was much needed after a long winter on the eastcoast. I jetted to Maui for a destination wedding and also decided to make the most of it by holding an editorial shoot for Green Wedding Shoes at the Montage Kapalua Bay with Jessica Haley Photography and a great team of local vendors.

At the end of April I was lucky enough to have spent some time over the course of the last 9 months to host and plan an amazing vendor networking event, The Luxury Wedding Spotlight with the fabulous Erica Powell of Reverie Gallery. We brought together the best of the best in the Connecticut wedding market for a day of networking, cocktailing, and socializing with future brides! A special thanks again to all that took part in the amazing event.

As the busy season in CT starts in May of course we decided to add a few more fun projects to our calendars as well. First off we started with a film photography workshop with the great Stefanie Kapra and Wellwed Magazine and ended with another amazing Walk Through with Justin and Mary. Stefanie's workshop took place up in New Haven at the Chetstone Mansion. It was a great event and fun was had by all attendee's. I even managed to give a small little presentation on the value of planners and photographers collaborating together.

Walk Through A Wedding in May with Justin and Mary had us spending a fun filled spring day at The Lace Factory with Carrie Wilcox, Roseville Designs, Pickles and Pies, and the wonderful Erin Infantino!

To officially kick off the 2015 wedding season I was fortunate enough to head to Engage14! in Bachelor Gulch. This was my second time attending Engage and boy did it not disappoint. I was skeptical at first about heading into the Colorado mountains at the Ritz Carlton Bachelor Gulch and the long day of traveling. I knew of course that the guys and gals of Engaging Concepts pull off one amazing event so how could I take the chance and risk missing it.

The remainder of June and July we focused on family, weddings and purchasing a new home in Greenwich CT with the most amazing studio space out back. I can hardly wait for what is in store for that space in 2015!

In August Erica, Lauren our Day of Assistant, and I packed up the jeep and headed to Nantucket for one of the best projects we had all year. We helped Justin and Mary host their Walk Through A Wedding Nantucket! ACK we had so much we cannot wait to try to convince them to do it again next year...

Kicking off the fall brought us the chance to head into Brooklyn and showcase some of Erica's floral work. She has been keeping her floral skills in hiding here at Stacie Shea Events but has a LOVE for everything flower related. So to give her some practice we signed up for The Not Wedding Brooklyn. Her and I had a blast heading into the city, working with some new Brooklyn vendors, and hanging out in Brooklyn for the day.

We finally slowed down as the major part of wedding season came to end for us. Erica took on one last editorial shoot to work with a close friend of hers - Trisha Keeler Photography. They planned the perfect shoot on a beautiful fall day to welcome us to the month of November. We are so excited as we have a great wedding on the books with Trisha in the new year in Cape Cod at our secret gem of a venue, the Mill Pond Estate.

We kicked off the holidays at Stacie Shea Events with two last events. I could think of no better way to kick it off than to plan one last Walk Through A Wedding with our two favorites, Justin and Mary Marantz!

Our last and final event of the year was a Friendsmas Dinner hosted at my house to really show thanks to those that put their love forth to us this year. Every year I start planning early in the summer what to gift vendors, and how to show them how much they mean to me and my business. So this year I planned a small dinner for 14 friendors to show them how much they mean to us at Stacie Shea Events and how they make my business better. I had such a fabulous time that I am confident I will be doing this again and quite possibly exploring it a few times a year so that I can really show all my vendor friends the love!

With this I bid 2014 adeu!  I have promised myself that I will slow down in 2015 and not have as busy of a calendar. I am forever grateful to the team that I was able to work with this year, and the vendors that make my job oh so much easier. I couldn't do any of this without the help and support from my dear husband, my mother in law who drops everything to come help, and my sweet mama who jumps on a plane to be my daycare the weeks I have weddings. I need you all, and you keep me pushing forward full steam ahead. I want my clients to know that they are my passion and their weddings are what I live for, and last but not least I wish for all my readers to have the best year yet! Happy New Year!

SSE 2014: The Recap.

2014 was quite the year for Stacie Shea Events.. and for our last blog post of the season we thought we would take a ride down memory lane and swoon over the photos one last time from this year’s weddings.

First up! Stacy and Mike got Maui'd in Maui. Stacie made her destination wedding debut in Hawaii this past year and traveled with family to go and help Stacy and Mike have a flawless wedding week on the Kapalua Beaches with a rehearsal dinner at Merrimans in Kapalua and a wedding ceremony and reception at the Kapalua Plantation. We even managed to get in an editorial photo shoot with the fabulous Montage Kapalua Bay and a pretty awesome team of vendors while on the island!

Next up..Kevin and Lauren ...These two lovebirds tied the knot at a lovely church ceremony in Greenwich at St. Catherine of Sienna followed by an intimate gathering of their closest family and friends at The Greenwich Boat and Yacht Club. The weather in May is always a gamble, but these two had the perfect afternoon.

It was a drop dead gorgeous day on May 17, 2014. The weather was outstanding, the water front views at Coveleigh were to die for and Christina and Brian got married! Seriously, this couple of vibrant and energetic people were turning heads all over the place! The Coveleigh Club in Rye, NY hosted Brian and Christina's guests for a dance party that would have gone on all night long. Nobody wanted this one to end, folks.

Julia and Scott, the sweetest couple any planner could asked for, were married June 28, 2014. Surrounded by family and friends, they were married at St. Mary's Church on The Avenue. The reception was full of signature cocktails and dance moves at the Greenwich Country Club with Elan Artists keeping everyone on the dance floor right until the end.

July 19, 2014. Ginger was married to Charlie at the home of her parents under a big beautiful tree that made the perfect ceremony space. Charlie was so smitten by his glowing bride. This was so obvious to everyone who took part in their special day. The reception took place at The Wainwright House with views of the water that were breathtaking by sunset.

It's not too often we get the opportunity to completely transform an alpaca farm on a beautiful estate in a lovely town like Bridgewater, CT. When we started working with Tracy and Eric we were so jazzed at the idea of creating a beautiful wedding  on Eric's childhood farm. The day was picture perfect. The grounds looked amazing with the ceremony, taking place atop a hill with breathtaking views, a cocktail hour under a Sperry Tent, and a one of a kind reception in the barn!

Last up, the Ganot’s.  We couldn’t, and still can’t, get enough of these two. Wrapping up the wedding season with a drop dead, over the top, killer wedding. Nicole and Gabe were married at The Winvian, a Relais & Chateaux in the Litchfield Hills just a short couple of months ago. This wasn't a wedding day, folks. It was a wedding weekend. The details were uncountable and the experience was immeasurable.

Trouvaille Workshop - Hey Gorgeous Events

Bradley James Photography As a planner and designer I find it so incredibly important that we continue to stay on top of the current wedding trends, and always continue learning. Not just about how to put on a seamless and perfect event but also learning from other amazing individuals in the wedding community. Since I was traveling home from M + S's wedding week in Maui I thought it was so perfect that Erica attend the Trouvaille Workshop with none other than the FAB Rhiannon from Hey Gorgeous Events.

Bradley James Photography

Erica came home from this 3 day workshop in Grand Rapids inspired beyond words. I can hardly contain myself with all the fun things we have coming our way at Stacie Shea Events. All I can say is that we are gearing up for a crazy rest of 2014 and an even more incredible 2015! Stay tuned for all our upcoming changes and get ready for a recap from Erica next week on the blog about this great workshop.

how to choose a wedding planner that is perfect for you

Event Design by Stacie Shea Events, Florals by Blush Floral Design, Photography by Charlotte Jenks Lewis Co-Written by Amy Cagginello & Stacie Shea

It finally happened. You and the love of your life are engaged to be married. After the excitement of telling family, friends and social media you are off the races of planning the perfect day to have every single person that you love and adore celebrate one of the biggest life milestones

Where to begin? Lock in a venue? A photographer? At that point you realize you cannot handle everything yourself or just want the event to look absolutely sublime so you begin to look for a planner. That process too can turn into an arduous task if you don’t know where to begin or what to look for.

With the ease of creating a website and Facebook / Instagram account, its easy for and inexperienced and unqualified person to have an online presence and be responsible for the design and execution of your wedding day. Unfortunately, your wedding is not a 4th of July party, there will not be a do-over next year. A wedding is a huge and often expensive event that has one chance for perfection.

Here are a few things to look for to help determine whether the planner you are hiring is the right fit for you & your wedding day:

1.    Style -  Does your planner understand and resonate with the look and feel you are trying to achieve for your day? This is huge, if your planner does not understand or capture your style you will likely be disappointed with the wedding and the planning process leading up to the day. A great way to know if your styles will match is by looking for their previous work, explore their website, look on wedding blogs and even flip thru some local media publications where their work might be featured. A planner and designers style can almost always be seen throughout their work, website, blog and print publications.

A second way to read into a planners style is how they dress, wear their hair, did you mesh with their website. If their personal style is a starbucks coffee with a popped collar and cowboy boots. Is this something you can resonate with? Do you love those things too?

2. Reviews - Having reviews from past clients validates a business. It means that a past client took the time after the honeymoon to tell the world how incredible their experience was. Unfortunately not all reviews are created equally and sometimes they are inaccurate. Ways to tell if a review is legitimate:

  • The review is personal. The reviewer spoke about specific thing or things that the planner really helped with, were ecstatic about their day and very clearly want the world to know. Reviews that are equivalent to an ebay review are likely fabricated i.e. "working with so & so was great, would definitely recommend".
  • Look for the wedding date for the review, if the date the same for several reviews it may be fabricated, or from friends and relatives of a single wedding.
  • Sometimes vendors write reviews for a planner which is misleading and inappropriate to be mixed in with client reviews. Business to business reviews are great in the proper forum.
  • The wedding story – Most planners almost always have the true wedding “Story”. So when you are exploring the internet about this planner stop by some of the fantastic wedding blogs and read the story about the couple. Almost always the couple will mention the planner or designer and how they helped tie their vision with the overall scope of the event.

3. Limited Liability Company & Insured - Oh this is the boring requirement but so insanely important. Checking to see if a business is an actual registered business is easy to do, simply visit your state's Secretary of State website and search for the business. Connecticut's could be found HERE.

Insurance is something that should never be overlooked. A legitimate planner will have an extensive policy that will cover almost every aspect of their business. In real life, situations happen and it is important not only for the planner but for the client that the planner and their employees are insured.

4. Editorial Work - one of the best forms of networking and advertising is when a planner/event designer creates an inspirational shoot to practice their creativity, ability to step outside the box and execute their own vision. Clients often have an idea for their wedding day, its important to be confident that your planner is able to contribute to your vision, help you maximize your ideas and budget and have the knowledge to know where to go to and how to achieve your look.

5. Trust Factor – The wedding planner and designer is almost always the person you will spend a TON of time with. They are who you will be tasting cake with, picking out linens, and spending countless hours in planning meetings or on email with. Make sure you know you trust them. Walk out of your intial meeting and know that you want to work with them and they get you.

A planner is the person who will tie the perfect bow, assist your maid of honor with the bustle and make sure you look picture perfect the entire day. Trust is the biggest factor.

6. Price- This is the one aspect that I know many will shy away from talking about. Lets be serious here. Weddings are expensive and its one day with a giant price tag on it. Hiring a planner to save yourself money is an aspect that not many think about. Look at it this way, a planner can give you recommendations on how to cut costs here and where you can reallocate funds to another area. Planners and Designers do many events a year so we almost always know how to stretch the dollar in a way that an inexperienced planner won’t. We can coach you thru DIY, tell you when to hire or outsource when the price is better. Yes many planners vary in their package pricing. Many times packages from one planner are the bottom end pricing for another or the high end for another. This is where a you get what you pay for mentality is something to remember. Planners spend on average 250 hours per wedding.

So as you get down to the nitty gritty with pricing remember that a planner who charges next to nothing (or does price promotions- red flag) and takes on a ton of weddings a year might not have as much time to spend on your day and making your experience unique and special. A planner who only books a certain number of events knows their limitations and knows how they can best service their clients. I mean its your wedding day…We all want to be the princess and most important for the day and the year planning up to that point!

7. 1st Impression - There is a ton you could tell from a planner by the time you are in the middle of a consultation. Did they respond to your inquiry quickly? Was it a personalized email or a generic standard email? Were they fairly easy/flexible in scheduling a consult? Did they confirm your meeting? Did they come to the meeting prepared? If they haven't worked your venue, did they research it? Were they on time to the meeting? Were they organized? Most importably, did they listen to you? Did they genuinely seem engaged in the meeting?

Your initial meeting with a planner is just one of many. That meeting sets the tone for all meetings that will take place during the planning process and it's important that all of the questions listed above were answered to your satisfaction before moving forward with the planner.

In life we pride ourselves on making smart, logical decisions. While planning a wedding, it is best to allow logic to take a backseat, and let your emotions guide you to the decisions that will create your beautiful and emotional day. When choosing a wedding planner, trust your instincts and leave to logic to the professional!

A special thanks to Ms. AC for helping me get this post out of our heads and onto paper. It has been so great to meet such a special lady in the CT Wedding Industry. I just adore this gal!!

Engage13! at the Montelucia - The Luxury Wedding Summit Recap

cc6789150c7789b9e195817e_650x433 Since starting my business I have been watching the tweets, facebook posts, and instagram pics when fellow wedding industry folks head out to Engage each December and June. Shortly after having my daughter I decided it was time to call myself out, pull the trigger and register to attend. On December 9th with my great friend Jessica Ulrich from Jessica Haley Photography we headed off to the AMAZING Montelucia in Scottsdale. This year Engage13! hit a huge milestone by making this the 12th go round of this luxury wedding business summit.

Chellise Michael Photography

To my friends, clients and industry friends it the Maserati of wedding industry events and attending it makes you feel like you just graduated from Harvard with an MBA in Wedding! Engage13! was filled with great speakers, incredible networking, so much information you feel like you are brain could explode at any given moment with all the hair brained crazy ideas floating thru your head!  The event is limited to the first 300 wedding professionals and it truly challenges its attendees to think outside the box and  provide new and exciting ways to give value to your clients.

Chellise Michael Photography

I would be giving away some of the new things coming to Stacie Shea Events in 2014 and 2015 if I told you everything I was able to walk away from this conference with.I will tell you that what started as a small world cab ride with the Brides Magazine Real Weddings Editor paved the road for a pretty amazing event. Then lead to a pretty amazing seat right next to Sean Low during the Opening day, a small group dinner and business analysis from Sean, an amazing walk back to my hotel room after the first night with Marcy Blum, a breakfast with Silvia Weinstock, and a Gala seat next to Ed Libby's business partner.  Engage13! provided speaker panels, small group experiences, FAB parties, and a once in a lifetime opportunity to rub elbows with the wedding industry’s best of the best.

Here are some of our my favorite shots from the course of the 3 days and a a few video recaps that would make anyone not want to miss out on the next Engage14!

Happy Friday + Engage13!

Happy Friday everyone! I leave you on this gloomy and rainy friday in Connecticut with this amazing picture from a wedding Stacie Shea Events had this past September at the Riverside Yacht Club in Greenwich. A special special thanks to the fabulous Charlotte Jenks Lewis for this beauty! Photo by Charlotte Jenks Lewis

Early Monday morning this Mama hops on a jet plane and heads to the fabulous Montelucia in Phoenix with Jessica Haley Photography. To say that I am excited would not even begin to explain how I am feeling. Nervous, excited, scared, worried...but most of all ready to submerse myself and my business in the talents of the best of the best in the Wedding Industry.

I have spent the better part of this week gathering clothes, shopping, trying on outfits and creating packing spreadsheets. Come on I'm a wedding planner what do you expect. I have more outfits than days that the actual conference is going on. I am nervous that I won't be dressed up enough or that I will be overdressed. HECK YEAH I AM!

I am so ready to take my business to a new level this year and I know that Engage13! is going to be a great tool to help me get there. To my clients looking for me the next couple of days I will be soaking up some knowledge and meeting some wedding folks I have been dying to meet in person like Hey Gorgeous EventsEvery Last Detail, Todd Fiscus, Kristin Banta and all the amazing folks here!

So for now off to finish up my packing and get my house ready for this Mama to take a few much needed days away in AZ!

ANNOUNCING THE NEW STACIE SHEA EVENTS BRAND!

Oh my goodness gracious!! Launch day is finally here after six months of planning, conference calls, basecamp conversations, photo updating, collateral selecting, website coding, and patiently waiting for it all to come together. Today I get to finally introduce you to the NEW, IMPROVED and simply put BEAUTIFUL Stacie Shea Events website and blog. HIP HIP HORRAY for the final step in my re-branding process that began this past fall and has been completed on Valentine's Day! What better way to spend a day based on love!!!!!

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

THE CONCEPT DEVELOPS

StacieShea_BlogGraphic_BrandBoard

GORGEOUS NEW WEBSITE

StacieShea_BlogGraphic_NewWebsite

I started this journey to redefine my brand while five months pregnant and preparing for the changes coming to my life on all fronts. Back in September knowing that I was going to be mama in four months I had a fierce feeling deep within me that I needed to revitalize my brand. My brand needed to match the new found life that was coming my way. A life that required simplification, more time for my family and baby, and a business that was built with a strong base from the ground up. In September I set out on a journey with Making Brands Happen for a better more stream lined client experience, new collateral, a brand spanking new blog, and a new website.  As I was digging into the Making Brands Happen program I came to learn more about who I am as a person, what I wanted to be as a Mama and Wife and came to the conclusion that my brand needed to better reflect every aspect of my life and not just the business side of me. At the end of this process things have changed with Stacie Shea Events and with the way I serve my brides and clients. I have more defined office hours, boundaries between work and home, and a new found respect for separating my time on social media while I'm at home being the best mama I can be. I’m so happy to finally scream from the rooftops that I have a gorgeous website and blog to match they way that I have grown as a business owner, wife, and mama these past couple of months.

This site would never have happened without the help of all of these fabulous ladies. They have worked so hard to help me get the finished product together. I had the BEST team! My Sincere gratitude goes out to Lara CaseyEmily Ley, Gina Zeidler, Love Inspired, Lindsay Letters and Jennie Fresa.

So please join me in my re-branding celebration by settling in the way I am this Valentine's Day with a Starbucks Latte in my comfy Thursday night pajamas and a baby on my lap exploring my new site. Welcome to the new re-branded Stacie Shea Events!
